A family-run Irish pub on Achill Island is facing an uncertain future, and Heineken is stepping in to help.
Josie McLoughlin, the fourth-generation owner of McLoughlin’s Bar, is looking for a successor to carry on the 155-year-old legacy.
With no family members to take over, he risks seeing his name removed from the pub’s sign.
A Global Quest for a McLoughlin
Heineken is launching a worldwide recruitment campaign to find a new McLoughlin to run the pub.
With 88 million Irish descendants living across the globe, the search will span from New York to Buenos Aires to Sydney.
The campaign includes billboards and ads in major cities, as well as digital and PR efforts.

Why This Matters: Preserving Irish Pub Culture

“The name McLoughlin is woven into the very fabric of this pub,” says Josie. “I’d love to see that story continue, finding a McLoughlin descendant to take it forward.”
Heineken’s involvement highlights the importance of preserving family-run pubs, which are vital to Irish social and cultural life.
McLoughlin’s Bar, established in 1870, is located in the heart of Achill Sound. It offers stunning views, a beer garden, a cozy fireplace, and traditional live music.
Achill Island, known for its beautiful landscapes and as a filming location for The Banshees of Inisherin, provides a vibrant community.
Heineken will offer a succession package to the new McLoughlin, including mentorship, business support, and initial investment guidance. This aims to ensure the pub’s continued success.
