Simple Theory Wine Co.: A New Generation of Maryland Winemaking

Frederick, MD – A new chapter in Maryland wine history is being written with the launch of Simple Theory Wine Co..

Founded by third-generation grower-vintners Melissa Aellen, 33, and her cousin Parker Aellen, 24, this winery is embracing the challenges and opportunities of a changing climate by focusing on traditional European Vitis vinifera grape varieties.

Backed by over 50 years of family winemaking expertise, Simple Theory is releasing a refined, contemporary collection of estate-grown wines, including Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Barbera, Albariño, Merlot, and more.

These wines, priced from $28 to $49, reflect a commitment to both the art and science of winemaking, as well as a deep dedication to sustainability.

What sets Simple Theory apart is its recognition of Maryland’s evolving climate. Increasingly mild winters and warmer, drier summers are now allowing for the successful ripening of European grape varietals that were previously difficult, if not impossible, to grow in the region.

Everyone hears about climate change, but I find it most commonly seen by and impacts those who work with the land as my family has for decades. We can grow grapes now that we couldn’t ripen 30 years ago. The climate has changed that much.

To complement their wines, Simple Theory has also opened a tasting lounge in the heart of Frederick, MD. This relaxed space offers visitors the chance to sample the wines, learn about the winery’s sustainable practices, and connect with the Aellen family’s passion for winemaking.

We are thrilled to open Frederick’s only winery tasting lounge, serving as the perfect way to learn about our wines and share our commitment to sustainable farming, winemaking, and ideally becoming a community gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Simple Theory’s story is rooted in a rich family legacy. The Aellen family has been growing grapes in Maryland since 1972 and played a key role in establishing the Linganore American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983.

Melissa and Parker are now carrying this legacy forward, combining tradition with a fresh, modern vision.

Melissa’s journey to becoming a winemaker began at age 10, inspired by a magazine cover featuring Gina Gallo. She pursued her passion, earning a degree in winemaking and viticulture from Cornell University and gaining experience at wineries around the world before returning to her family’s vineyards in Maryland.

Simple Theory’s 25-acre estate is planted with a variety of grapes, with plans for expansion in 2025. The winery practices integrated pest management, uses cover crops to promote biodiversity, and employs targeted spraying to minimize environmental impact.

The production facility is 100% solar-powered and a Maryland Green Business of the Year Award recipient.

We are working toward becoming a certified B Corp, where sustainable initiatives reach beyond the environment and encompass the community and the winery’s employees as well. Our environmental efforts are designed to preserve our business for the next 50 years.
